Thursday Updates
Good afternoon Loma Portal families! We are now into March and soon, it will be a full year since our schools closed. Unbelievable to think this pandemic and its affects have lasted a year already. As our nation and community continue to navigate all 2021 will bring, my promise to you all is to lead with kindness, transparency and love. Together, we always achieve more and we will get through this as a community. Remember to take care of each other, stay healthy and stay positive! Things have continued to be busy here at Loma Portal as we prepare for our eventual reopening (more info below). Very exciting! See below for quite a few announcements and updates. Looking forward to seeing you all soon. –MM
- First and foremost, tomorrow night (3/5) is our annual VARIETY SHOW! This year’s show will of course be “virtual” but I can’t wait to watch our talented students perform! Access the show by going to this link tomorrow night at 6:30pm: LINK
- Reopening Update: Our district continues to work with our unions and medical professionals to complete their plan for reopening schools at some point this Spring. Nothing has been finalized yet but a “Hybrid” model is currently being discussed. This would entail permitting half of our students to return to school for a morning session, while the other half of our students return for an afternoon session and would allow for classes of 10-12 students for each session (instead of a full class). More information on what this would look like, start date, how it would affect bell schedules, how this will affect individual students, etc. will be coming out soon. As always, I will send out updated information as I receive it. All SDUSD schools are currently waiting on SDUSD’s decisions and procedures on reopening before we are able to send out any specifics on what our school’s reopening plan will look like. What I can update you on is that our school has been preparing our PPE and ventilation since last summer. Plexiglass dividers, air purifiers, classroom ventilation, sanitization stations, and classroom arrangements promoting physical distancing have been prepped for some time now. We WILL be prepared to safely reopen our school when we receive clearance to do so. For more information, check out our website’s School Reopening Info page HERE. In addition, our district has recently created a “Reopening Updates” page HERE.
- This week is Read Across America week! In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, our wonderful librarian, Mrs. Hutchinson, has written/directed/produced a fun Dr. Seuss-themed play starring some of our very own Loma Portal students!! These actors and actresses were amazing! Normally this would be performed live on stage during our annual Literacy Night, but this year, you can enjoy the show by clicking HERE.
- SAVE the DATE! We will be hosting a drive through PICTURE DAY for all students on March 26th. More information will be sent out shortly.
- At our Point Loma Cluster Schools Foundation meeting this week, parents explored the concept of Social Emotional Well Being and the role the Pandemic (and the related changes) may have upon us and our children. Click HERE for the presentation.
- Last but not least, I will be hosting another virtual Principal’s Coffee on Friday 3/12 at 9:30am. At this meeting, I will be speaking about our school and district’s reopening progress and answer any questions you may have. Hope to see you there!
