Principal Update Sept 8

September 8th Update

Good afternoon Loma Portal families and welcome back from the long weekend.  I hope you were able to stay cool and have some fun!  And hopefully you and your families are safe and unaffected by the fires out east. I just wanted to welcome you all to week 2 of the 2020-2021 school year! I know our teaching staff was hard at work last week – creating connections with their students, distributing student materials, planning with their grade levels, and taking part in quite a bit of learning.  It was a busy week!  We are all excited to begin the next phase of Online Learning though!  Beginning today, your child’s classroom teacher will be leading the activities and assignments each day (I am sure you already know that by now) through live online sessions (i.e. Zoom, Google Meet, etc.) and various offline learning opportunities.  We are thrilled to be taking this next step with you and your child as we journey through Online Learning together.  Our school will continue to place an emphasis on creating meaningful bonds with your child as we roll out academic content.  It will be an exciting year for sure!  Please see below for some updates and reminders. Have an amazing week!  --MM

  1. First and foremost, the LPE staff realizes how difficult Online Learning can be for our families and we wanted to let you know that WE SUPPORT YOU.  If you are having any difficulties with daily schedules due to childcare issues or anything else for that matter, please let us know.  Your child’s teacher and I will be happy to work with you.  Hang in there parents!
  2. We have an upcoming Loma Portal Foundation meeting, hosted on Zoom, coming up tomorrow Sept 9th at 6pm. If you do not already know, our Foundation is a huge part of what makes our school so special.  Our Foundation hosts fundraisers and fun events throughout the school year to fund/supplement our STEAM, Music, and Library programs along with so much more.  Foundation meetings are open to the public and are held monthly.  If you would like to attend the meeting tomorrow, please RSVP to [email protected] to get the Zoom link. For more info about our amazing Foundation, click HERE.
  3. According to state law, every school is required to form a School Site Council (SSC).  The job of an SSC is to discuss various legal requirements and the overall school plan.  It is a valuable school committee made up of the Principal, teachers, and parents.  All SSC meeting are open to the public, but if you would like to be a part of our Loma Portal SSC, please let me know asap (just respond to this email).  We meet monthly for approx. one hour and all meetings will be held on Zoom for the foreseeable future.  It is a great way to get involved!  More info on our SSC can be found HERE. Our first meeting of the year will be on Tuesday October 6th (Zoom link will be sent out soon).
  4. I know that many of you have heard information regarding school reopenings on the news lately and have questions regarding when and how LPE will physically reopen. For the most up to date info on our school district’s decisions on reopening and on all other issues, a great resource is the SDUSD Newscenter which can be found HERE. In addition to this, as always, I will keep you all as informed as possible on our school’s timeline for reopening.
