Once our students begin fourth grade they are ready to jump right to instruments. (Typically fourth graders will spend the beginning portion of the year learning to read music and play the recorders). The district supported Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) department delivers instruction in the areas of Strings, Band and Choral. Each child is invited to choose a favored instrument (which they have been exposed to previously in 3rd grade), and join that class for the school year. Our students have been able to start at a higher level because of their knowledge and experiences in music.
The San Diego Unified School District provides instrumental music standards based instruction to students fourth through twelfth grade. Loma Portal Elementary students are offered pull-out full grade level programs. Instrumental music instruction at the secondary level is primarily offered though band and orchestra courses in which students participate in performances and productions. The Point Loma Cluster Schools excels in the area of music. Dana Middle, Correia Middle and Point Loma High School are all known for their excellent music programs.
